At the Café-concert, c. 1879-1884
Edgar Degas
French, 1834
- 1917
oil on canvas
65.8 x 46.7 cm
Gift of the Saidye Bronfman Foundation, 1995
National Gallery of Canada (no. 38088)
The woman sits comfortably in her opera box, dressed in elegant evening attire accented by a colourful mantle that drapes her left shoulder. In her hand she holds a black fan - an invaluable fashion accessory for such social affairs. The distinctive facial features and conventional pose of the sitter suggest that the painting may have been conceived originally as a portrait.
