David copied these faces from the group of elect popes and bishops in the central panel of the "Ghent Altarpiece" (1432) in the Cathedral of St. Bavo by Hubert and Jan van Eyck. The altarpiece, famous in its own day, remained an important source for Netherlandish artists for many decades.
