Torso, 1994

Oviloo Tunnillie
Canadian (Inuit), 1949
dark-green stone
23.5 x 9.3 x 3.6 cm
Purchased 1995
National Gallery of Canada (no. 37686)

These three small works show the diversity of regional and personal styles. Working in Arviat, Pangnark and Arluk, among others, developed a type of figuration that reduced detail to a minimum. Hints of facial features and the shape of the woman's parka barely emerge from the form of the stone. Tunnillie's "Torso" is outside the usual subject matter of Inuit sculpture, an example of this artist's wide-ranging interests and desire to explore new forms.
