Yacht Race at Halifax, 1850
John O'Brien
Canadian, 1831
- 1891
oil on canvas
31 x 44.5 cm
Purchased 1958
National Gallery of Canada (no. 6933)
This charming painting represents something of an exception within its author's oeuvre. John O'Brien is best known for his pictures of sailboats, and this small work, dominated by blues and greens, depicts a sloop and two schooners. Here, however, rather than meticulously rendering the vessels' smallest details, the artist has chosen to convey a sense of the wind that, on a sunny day, is whipping up the water, driving the clouds and swelling the sails.
