Venus with a Dove, 1757

François Boucher
French, 1703 - 1770
red, white, and black chalk on laid paper, laid down on laid paper
27.8 x 38.2 cm
Purchased 1957
National Gallery of Canada (no. 6897)

Of Boucher's female figures, one scholar wrote that they are not merely nude but "figures clothed in dazzling nudity." Boucher made many such drawings as studies for paintings and as finished works in their own right, to be sold to collectors with a taste for titillating female nudes disguised coyly as figures from Classical mythology. This particular design, one of his most popular subjects, exists in several versions and was later engraved.
