Jacques Callot French, 1592
etching on laid paper 14.8 x 11.5 cm; plate: 13.6 x 10.4 cm (oval image) Purchased 1994
National Gallery of Canada (no. 37523)
This little print is a remarkable achievement: a grand Baroque composition on a tiny scale. Callot etched a second, almost identical version of the print after his return to Nancy, probably to replace the worn-out plate he had first executed in Florence.
