An Angel Bringing Food to a Hermit,
French, 1703 - 1770
black chalk on laid paper

Gift of Mrs. Samuel Bronfman, Montreal, 1957
National Gallery of Canada (no. 6888)
The theme of this scene - an angel feeding a hermit - may well refer to an episode in the Old Testament where Elijah is fed by an angel (1 Kings 19:5-8). Stylistically, this black chalk drawing rendered in lines more allusive than descriptive reminds us that François Boucher was decisively influenced by certain High Baroque Italian masters.
