In the 1970s, Yves Gaucher began to work with asymmetrical shapes, eventually developing the compositional structure seen here: vertical bands of varying widths with some slight diagonals. The painting spans separate panels, reinforcing a sense of veil-like movement as the eye passes over the real and painted divisions between the colour areas. This open, variable structure allows the artist to focus on colour relationships. "T.D.S." is one of a series of paintings in dark colours in which the artist harmonizes rich nuances of contrasting hues toned toward, but never reaching, the darkness of black.
