A pivotal painting for Claude Tousignant, "Frontal" was preceded by the artist's Tachist works in which he juxtaposed splotches of pure colour on a white ground. Here, the deep blue area dominates the composition, held in tension by vertical bands on either side, the yellow drawing the viewer's eye to the left. The quick-drying properties of commercial automobile paint permitted Tousignant to work quickly and on a large scale.
