Untitled, c. 1951

Alexandra Luke
Canadian, 1901 - 1967
oil on canvas
97 x 84 x 2.5 cm
Purchased 1993
National Gallery of Canada (no. 36833)

Like the Cubist artists of the early 20th century, Alexandra Luke fragmented her subject and reassembled the elements on a single plane. The artist often painted to classical music, and this shows in the rhythmic elements of her composition. In 1952 Luke organized the first national exhibition of abstract painting, "Canadian Abstract Painters", for the Oshawa Art Society, and the first meeting of Painters Eleven was held in Luke's studio in Oshawa one year later.
