Man with Pipe, c. 1940-1960

Unknown (Inuit Artist)

grey stone with red and green wool, red paint, and white inlay
14.3 x 7 x 4.9 cm
Gift of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, 1992 (Gift of Gunther and Inge Abrahamson, Ottawa, 1984)
National Gallery of Canada (no. 37446)

The pipe and cap suggest this figure is a "qablunaat" - perhaps the Hudson Bay man who ran the settlement trading operation and, later, bought sculpture. The "other" is not often seen in Inuit art, perhaps owing to lack of interest or censorship on the part of the local buyer?
