Woman Fixing her Hair, c. 1894
Camille Pissarro
Danish, French, 1830
- 1903
pastel on pale-grey laid paper
52.1 x 44.5 cm
Purchased 1956
National Gallery of Canada (no. 6636)
In the 1880s, Pissarro began to work on interior compositions of models performing their daily rituals: in this case, a young girl arranging her hair. Like Degas, Pissarro was interested in experimenting with various media to depict the same motif; this pastel, for example, relates directly to a monotype and painting. Applied in simple, light strokes, the pastel flickers across the surface, emphasizing the grain and texture of the pale grey paper.
