Dancer at Rest, 1926

Henri Hébert
Canadian, 1884 - 1950
plaster with paint
46.4 x 18.5 x 13 cm
Purchased 1991
National Gallery of Canada (no. 35977)

In the late 1920s Hébert sculpted a series of nude figures with titles evoking the urban culture of the modern age such as "Flapper" and "Charleston." Always working from a live model, Hébert has depicted the model in a relaxed and natural pose, an effect heightened by the sensitive treatment of the face, that of a woman rather than a performer.
