"The girl was sorely frightened, and looked back at the sands behind her ... and her fluttering garments floated in the breeze" (Ovid, Metamorphoses, book 2). Europa, Princess of Tyre, has innocently climbed on the back of a bull - Jupiter in disguise - only to be carried off to the island of Crete to bear him three sons. While using ravishing colours, Reni evokes this scene as it had been treated on classical cameos and mosaics.
