Bird Creature, 1990

Kiugak Ashoona
Canadian (Inuit), 1933
light-green stone
49 x 45 x 22 cm
Purchased 1991
National Gallery of Canada (no. 35529)

OLD - Powerful, brooding, menacing - "Bird Creature" combines psychological drama with a masterful working of the serpentine stone. It is an approach to sculpture that today is associated with many of Kiugak's fellow Cape Dorset/Qikiqtaaluq region artists. Kiugak leaves the viewer to speculate on the creature's status within the realm of beings. Is this a hunter/shaman turned bird of prey, or something else?
