For his model, Rodin selected a young Belgian soldier. He insisted the man keep his arms raised - using a pole for support - in order to highlight the contours of his torso and legs. So true to life was the result that, when the sculpture was first exhibited in Brussels and Paris, the critics declared it must have been made from a cast of a living model.
