From the 1890s Louis-Philippe Hébert produced a number of smaller sculptures, many drawn from imagined or real episodes in the history of New France. The story of this idealized and eroticized Algonquin woman leaning against her nigog or fishing spear is clarified in the inscription on the base. "L'homme blanc fuirait il la cabane algonquine ?" Used by the white colonist, will she be abandoned and left behind?
