Here is how Jean Arp and his wife, the painter and dancer Sophie Taeuber-Arp, summed up the goal of their artmaking: "We do not want to imitate nature, we do not want to copy, we want to create. We want to create as the plant creates its fruit, we don't want to copy. We want to create in an immediate way. As no trace of abstraction exists in the art, we call it concrete art."
