Having spent a good part of his youth in France, Henri Hébert was imbued with French literature and culture. This naked figure attended by two young goats plucking grapes from an overhead bower evokes an autumn in the south of Europe rather than Canada. Yet the poetic spirit of the scene has a light, decorative quality affirmed by the flat columns framing the composition suggesting it was intended for a specific architectural setting.
