The erroneous inscription at the lower right attributes this drawing to Watteau an acknowledgment of that artist's invention and popularisation of the "fête galante". In this genre, elegant men and women find themselves immersed in beautiful, sensuous landscape settings. Here, one such group stops for a picnic in the lush garden of an imposing villa.
