In this work, the viewer is presented with a challenging representational system. Here, Escher constructs a picture within a picture, or a representation about representation. The making of the image was a complicated process in which Escher used his own prints as the content for the work displayed in the "print gallery", but he created an alternate reality by distorting the image, challenging traditional systems of perspective.
