Start of a motorcycle endurance race across the country (according to the artist)
Tom Hodgson developed his charged abstract paintings as a member of Toronto's Painters Eleven. "Enduro Take Off" is an act of bravado - the large format, the use of bright and acidic colours, the energetic brushwork, and the contrast between impasto applied directly from the tube and the stained areas of colour all impart an extremely seductive and tactile quality to the work. Further, Hodgson's choice to leave large areas of raw canvas exposed add to the daring nature of the activity depicted - the start of a motorcycle endurance race across the country.
