Cézanne often painted the Jas de Bouffan, his family estate, located just outside Aix-en-Provence. Although he did not always live there, his familiarity with the setting and its seclusion were important to his art. This view of outlying farm buildings and a grove of chestnut trees is rendered in small, sketchy brushstrokes. For Cézanne, colour and drawing could not be separated.
