Two Designs for Goblets,

Erasmus Hornick
Flemish, German - 1583
pen and grey-brown ink with grey and yellow wash over black chalk on laid paper, laid down on laid paper
upper design: 15.5 x 11.8 cm irregular; lower design: 16.1 x 12.7 cm irregular
Purchased 1954
National Gallery of Canada (no. 6194a-b)

A cup without a base is a "parting cup" or "stirrup cup," given to guests with their feet in the stirrups, about to leave. The images have been cut out from their original paper and glued onto another sheet. The wash on both areas matches, so probably Hornick himself did the transfer.
