The Virgin and Child with St. Anthony Abbot and a Donor, 1472

Hans Memling
Flemish, 1440 - 1494
oil on oak
92.7 x 53.6 cm
Purchased 1954
National Gallery of Canada (no. 6191)

This exquisite panel was presumably commissioned by the anonymous man shown kneeling in adoration of the Virgin and Christ Child and accompanied by his protector saint, Anthony Abbot, identified by his attributes - the pig and the walking stick. While these figures are in the foreground of the picture, Memling takes advantage of the diminishing size of the floor tiles and the receding lines of the door and window to create an illusion of spatial depth.
