A formidable and perspicacious art dealer of the avant-garde in Paris, Ambroise Vollard was also an important publisher of albums of artist prints and books illustrated by artists. Completed in 1904, this portrait was part of the print portfolio "Douze lithographies originales de Pierre-Auguste Renoir" (Twelve original lithographs by Pierre-Auguste Renoir), published in 1919, the same year as Vollard's biography of the artist, "La vie et l’oeuvre de Pierre-Auguste Renoir" (The life and work of Pierre-August Renoir). Renoir first met Vollard around 1895, when the dealer, who sought information about a portrait he owned by Édouard Manet, visited him.
