In this later work, Rembrandt abandoned the drama of "The Three Trees" for a calmer and more economical style. He based this print on close observations of an identifiable location just outside Amsterdam, and then reworked it several times in order to create a more intense, harmonious design. This impression in the fourth state represents his final version.
