In the midst of battle, Dollard des Ormeaux raises his sword and urges his companions to fight to the finish. A colonist, holding his gun by the barrel, prepares for hand-to-hand combat while his Huron ally succumbs to his wounds. The subject, drawn from Louis Fréchette's "La Légende d'un peuple" (1887) immortalizing the heroes of New France recounts the determination of these comrades-in-arms to avert a massive attack by the Iroquois against the French settlements of Ville-Marie (Montreal), Trois-Rivières, and Quebec in 1660.
