I Can Hear You Think (Dedicated to Stephen Hawking), 1984-1985
Jana Sterbak
Czechoslovakian, Canadian, 1955
cast iron heads, copper wire, transformer, magnetic field, electrical cord
head with wire coil: 13 x 8.8 x 11 cm; head: 15.3 x 9.5 x 12.7 cm; cord: 312 cm long
Purchased 1987
National Gallery of Canada (no. 29702)
Electrical current passing through the copper wire coil magnetizes the head with the coil which then attracts the other head - since the head is too heavy to actually move, the only evidence of the magnetic force is the greater warmth of the magnet-head
