Christ emerges from his tomb and is about to embark on his journey of forty days until the Ascension. In keeping with the classical ideals of the Renaissance, Dürer renders him in the pose of an ancient Greek god. Guards assigned by Pilate, lying asleep around the tomb or just waking up in shock, are cleverly framed within the image. Note the cramped pair of legs at the lower right.
