The Lamentation, 1507

Dürer began "The Engraved Passion" series with this print. St. John the Evangelist, his face in shadow, holds the body of Christ while the Virgin lifts her son’s arm. Standing above them, Mary Magdalene wrings her uplifted hands in mourning. To the right stand Joseph of Arimathea, wearing a pointed hat, and Nicodemus, with a jar of spices that will be placed in the linen cloth wrapped around the body. One marvels at details such as the building seen through the ladder rungs or the face of a mourner obscured in shadow between Mary and St. John.
