Christ Carrying the Cross, 1512
Albrecht Dürer
German, 1471
- 1528
engraving on laid paper
11.7 x 7.5 cm
Purchased 1949
National Gallery of Canada (no. 5608)
Instead of collapsing under the weight of the cross, Christ stands erect and engages with spectators, even as a crazed henchman pulls him forward. To the left, Veronica kneels and offers a cloth, or "sudarium", for Christ to wipe his face. Though the procession to Calvary is usually depicted in daylight, the dark background and bright highlights of Dürer’s print suggest it is set in the evening like a nocturne.
