This work is the first of Escher's prints, and one of the few, created using the engraving technique known as mezzotint. Mezzotint engraving allows the artist to create soft gradations in tone, from black to white. With this technique, Escher was able to capture the dull shimmer of the skin of a frog that he found behind a piece of furniture in his studio.
