Lucas Vorsterman, a printmaker who worked closely with Van Dyck, is exhibited here in three states. The first shows the plate as Van Dyck left it; the second adds a frame and text. The third shows a significant change: parallel hatching is added in engraving, setting off the figure from the background. While Van Dyck was not averse to such additions, this change was made by a later publisher, in an attempt to make the print seem more finished. These prints are exhibited mounted together in an album, as was often done by print collectors in the past.
