The Fleming Frans Snyders (1579-1657) was a prolific still-life and animal painter who, like van Dyck, worked for a period with Rubens. For this portrait, which was included in the" Iconography", van Dyck etched only the face of Snyders. The print was completed by Jacques Neefs (1610-after 1660), who filled in the less essential details of Snyders's body.
