Rest by the Way, after 1790

George Morland
British, 1763 - 1804
oil on canvas
25.4 x 30.5 cm
Gift of F.J. Nettlefold, Nutley, Sussex, England, 1948
National Gallery of Canada (no. 4919)

Painting for the open market, Morland enjoyed phenomenal success. His rustic subject matter coupled with an elegant, fashionable style satisfied public taste - formed, like his, by both 17th-century Dutch art and contemporary French painting. "Rest by the Way" is fresh and unlaboured, showing his great facility in the quickly applied paint and his skilful use of a limited range of colours. This facility would later become a drawback, and his work grew repetitive and hurried as he struggled with alcohol and debt.
