In this small plein-air sketch, made in the forest of Fontainebleau, near Paris, Corot has captured a sandbank and the trees beyond with quick and decisive brushwork. Influential to later French painters, including many Impressionists, Corot’s landscape sketches were often shared with his peers and students – and even rented out on occasion. This work remained in the artist’s possession until his death in 1875. In the late 1940s it was purchased by Emil Bührle, an important Swiss collector.
