"It is difficult to think of a contemporary photographer who has limited subject matter to the degree that Lynne Cohen has," writes NGC Curator of Photographs Ann Thomas. For more than forty years Cohen has received international recognition for her photographs of locations notable for their mundane strangeness. While human beings are absent, the trace of human psychology and behaviour is everywhere in her images, to which she applies "deceptively neutral formal strategies - strategies that by showing what is on the surface reveal what lies beneath it." These recent works demonstrate the artist's increasing use of colour, which, while important, remains subordinate to the discordant attributes of the interiors she shoots.
