Sandy Plotnikoff uses an antique foil-stamping press for embossing zines, books, postcards and other random objects - a list that hints at the assorted endeavours of this busy Toronto artist who works in various media from sculpture and performance to the creation of multiples, editions and artist books. It is in reference to printed matter that Plotnikoff describes his "Foil Problem" series, which includes these two drawings. "The works," he says, "reflect my ongoing interest in using print materials beyond their intended purpose; instead of making copies, I process variants through free-form studio experimentation then refine the results."
