reclaimed wood and textile figures
National Gallery of Canada (no. 45418)
Jon Pylypchuk's sculptures and paintings are recognizable for their cast of animalistic characters situated in dire settings. Created for an exhibition in Detroit, this installation features figures "hanging out" against a backdrop of dilapidated building materials. "The abandonment of beautiful old homes and the organized dumping of the castings of a former wealth had a profound effect on me," Pylypchuk recalls. However, in the midst of "what seemed like a void, actually existed a strong arts community ... through every type of adversity - riots, poverty, corruption - things began again. Lives and homes were cobbled together and the weight of time couldn't counteract the resistance of persistent life."
