These paintings draw on folk art traditions - specifically those of Eastern Pennsylvania Dutch descendants - of marking barns and objects such as bibles and pottery with hex symbols. In re-interpreting the geometric forms and symbols of the style, the artist contracted professional sign-painter Albert Nickel to execute the final productions exhibited here. This decision is consistent with the process of minimalist artists who often had their designs fabricated by an industrial manufacturer. While some view these signs as merely decorative, others attest to their power to ward off evil and yield a good harvest. Macleod translates them into artworks that can be viewed through an aesthetic and conceptual lens.
