Hayeur explores human attempts to reorganize the world and the resulting clashes between utopian and functional visions. Her landscapes represent conflicting desires: the wish to control the land and a longing to be at one with it. For this series, she has created digital montages of her photographs of popular tourist attractions such as the Mohave Desert, the Everglades and Cape Cod with images of the same areas selected from the Internet. Describing this series, she explained, "I use the 'transparency' of photography and the fact that it appears to be a direct representation of reality to fabricate spaces that are suspended between document and fiction." The resulting panoramas provide a breadth of vision and a touch of the sublime. Yet the work also points to its own constructed nature: the artist's additions and alterations are subtly present, pricking viewers' capacity to completely believe what they are seeing.
