John White Abbott
British, 1763 - 1851
pen and brown ink with watercolour over traces of graphite, heightened with gum arabic, on laid paper
29 x 30.6 cm (image extends onto mount 1 mm at top and right side)
Purchased 1938
National Gallery of Canada (no. 4446)

A talented amateur artist, Abbott was the pupil of Francis Towne, another Devonshire artist whose decorative style of flat washes enclosed in neat pen outlines Abbott closely imitated. Abbott had a curious habit of starting his drawing on a smaller sheet of paper and then extending it by adding strips at the bottom or sides as he worked on it, as may be seen in the present example.
