A talented amateur artist, Abbott was the pupil of Francis Towne, another Devonshire artist whose decorative style of flat washes enclosed in neat pen outlines Abbott closely imitated. Abbott had a curious habit of starting his drawing on a smaller sheet of paper and then extending it by adding strips at the bottom or sides as he worked on it, as may be seen in the present example.
