François Boucher
French, 1703 - 1770
red chalk on laid paper, laid down on laid paper

Purchased 1938
National Gallery of Canada (no. 4444)

Once ascribed to Jacques-Philippe Le Bas, this pastoral, with its vigorous use of line, was recognized in 1963 as being the work of the young François Boucher. The origin of such representations of shepherds and shepherdesses in a bucolic setting can be traced to the rustic scenes of Dutch art, in particular those of Abraham Bloemaert.
