By completing two print series based on the life of Raphael, the Riepenhausen brothers helped promote the 19th-century cult of the Renaissance artist. This drawing is for the second cycle, which Johannes published on his own two years after Franz’s sudden death, in 1833, the same year Raphael’s body was exhumed for scientific examination.
