Ceres, c. 1762-1765

Anton Raphael Mengs
German, 1728 - 1779
red chalk on ivory laid paper
27.4 x 32.8 cm
Purchased 2006
National Gallery of Canada (no. 41957)

For the figure of Ceres (Demeter) in "The Apotheosis of Hercules" ceiling in the Madrid palace, Mengs followed classical models, such as the famous seated Demeter of Knidos. Here, he is working out the foreshortening of the figure and the way her garment falls, using red chalk rather than ink in order to capture the expressive folds of drapery.
