A precious material, ivory was used mainly in Southern India for small sculpture and luxury objects. This exceptional relief celebrating erotic love represents the famous patron of the arts, who was ruler of Madurai from 1623 to 1659, embracing his wife while servants wave fans, flowers and a fly-whisk.
