Paterson Ewen turned away from painting landscapes in the mid-1950s and moved toward abstraction, yet the inspiration for his "Black-out" series was the night sky. Along with the title, the glimpses of colour and thick rectangular motifs suggest an aerial view of buildings and plots of land prior to an air raid. Coincidentally, Ewen's exhibition of this series of paintings opened at Galerie Denise Delrue the night of Montreal's first blackout drill in 1961.
