Gauguin based this print on a painting of the same subject he made in December 1888 (Art Institute of Chicago), when he was working with Vincent van Gogh in Arles. Part of the « Volpini Suite » of zincographs, "The Old Maids" shows women in local Provençal dress crossing a public garden.
