There is no more recognizable image of late-nineteenth-century Parisian leisure than the view of the theatre box, "la loge," a privileged space, both private and public, that allowed a certain independence and exclusivity. The theatre drew audiences intrigued by the elaborate nature of productions, but as this print suggests it was also an opportunity to participate in voyeuristic observation of the audience. This is a signed proof made outside the published colour edition, which appeared in the monthly journal "l'Artiste" in May 1894.
